About

My name is Jill. I’m a 20-something American who reads voraciously and widely. I will be posting my thoughts on books I read here. You can also find me on Goodreads.

My blog title is inspired by this quotation from The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson:

“Don’t do it, Eleanor told the little girl; insist on your cup of stars; once they have trapped you into being like everyone else you will never see your cup of stars again; don’t do it; and the little girl glanced at her, and smiled a little subtle, dimpling, wholly comprehending smile, and shook her head stubbornly at the glass. Brave girl, Eleanor thought; wise, brave girl.”

For me, the cup of stars symbolizes what we like, what we want, what we aspire to be. I like reading books. I want to form cogent thoughts on books and discuss them. I (maybe) aspire to be a writer.

This is my cup of stars.

  1. Hi Jill,

I came to your blog via a spot-on review of THE EMPEROR’S BLADES, and liked your thoughts behind the naming of your blog. I suppose I had somewhat similar thoughts when I named my latest fantasy novel PASS ON THE CUP OF DREAMS, this a couple of years ago.
When Falca Breks (the protagonist in that novel), was a young boy living in a squalid tenement in the decaying port city of Draica, his mother would leave a cracked, battered cup by his pallet at bed-time, after pretending to fill it with dreams…in the hope he might find dreams of better places as he slept.
Best of luck with your aspirations to be a writer.
